Safi’s vision is to leverage computers and internet to deliver distance learning and tele-medicine to the remote regions of the world allowing millions of human beings to move out of extreme poverty to become productive global citizen.

Professional Career

Safi is a successful technology entrepreneur, executive and investor for the last twenty-five years. Best known as a Founder and CEO of AST Research, a Fortune 500 public company, Safi has developed deep relationships in the technology industry, investment banking and Venture Capital community, and local research universities. He is currently an active technology investor, advisor and Board member of technology companies.

Safi and two other immigrant engineers founded AST Research, Inc. in 1980 to address the emerging new PC opportunity. AST went public in 1984 with profitable sales of over $100 million and by 1992 with sales of over $1.4 billion had become a Fortune 500 Company. With over 6000 employees and sales of over $2.5 billion AST ranked in the top 10 PC companies in the world and the market share leader in China. In 1997, Korea’s largest electronics company Samsung Electronics acquired AST.

Safi was the first Pakistani American to take a company public in 1984 and founder/CEO of a Fortune 500.

Currently, Safi is Chairman of Quartics (, a fabless semiconductor company in Irvine, California. Quartics is delivering high definition (HD) video processing solutions to leading PC OEMs. This device offloads the CPU and delivers superior video watching experience for applications like YouTube, Skype and other social video sites. Quartics’ video processing unit (VPU) also has applications for the next generation IP set-top boxes (STBs), mobile internet devices (MIDs) and HDTVs.

Safi is also on the Advisory Board of Anvita Health ( of San Diego, the innovative health care analytics company that provides the analytics engine for Google™ Health™ and other health care leaders. He also serves as a Board member of Japan Ecologia ( of Tokyo which is developing natural pesticides for consumer and agricultural needs.

International Business

International Business Safi has led multiple international technology and entrepreneurial projects. In 1991 when Dubai was barely known to the American companies, AST was the first technology company to build a new facility in Jabel Ali to reach the ME, North Africa and South Asia region. In 2000 Safi become executive of Avaz Networks, a predecessor to Quartics. Avaz, was first American technology company with over 150 professionals in Islamabad and largest team of post graduate engineers under one roof. Safi established an extension in Malaysia where R&D could be performed in collaboration with local universities, research institutions (such as MIMOS) and local industry.

Public Service / Community Service

Safi serves on the Mayor’s Technology Advisory Committee formed by Mayor Curt Pringle of the City of Anaheim


He is on the Advisory Board of Merage Foundation for American Dream (, which is dedicated to helping immigrants join mainstream America.

He is a founding member and former President of the Southern California chapter of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) since 1997 ( TIE’s main objectives are professional networking and mentoring new entrepreneurs.

Safi was a member of the transition committee of the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003. He is a former member of President Clinton’s Export Council in 1994-98. He traveled on several missions with Secretaries of Commerce, the late Ronald Brown, Robert Mosbacher, Richard Daly and US Trade Representative Mickey Cantor, as part of a delegation to emerging markets such as China, India, Indonesia and Thailand.

He was a founding member of the California Business-Higher Education Forum and was its Chairman during 1994-95. He was also the Regent’s Professor at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Irvine and is current member of UCI’s CEO roundtable.

Philanthropy / Social Entrepreneurship

As a Trustee for Give2Asia (, Safi is spending time with the organization to bring efficiency into their operations and to fully leverage IT for its day-to-day operations.

Safi is the founding Chairman of Unity Productions Foundation ( since 1999. Unity’s mission is to use media for greater understanding of Islam and Muslims in America.

Safi has supported Council on Islamic Education since 1993 ( and to support and strengthen American public education system.

As a social entrepreneur, Safi invested in the localization of Sesame Street in Urdu language to be broadcasted on television as children programming.

During his career, Safi has gained national and international recognition for his professional and philanthropic work, some of which is highlighted here. Recipient of “Director of the Year for Early Stage Companies” Award from Forum for Corporate Directors based in Orange County, California, Recipient of the “Humanitarian Award” from National Council for Communities and Justice Orange County.
